Sports in Brief: U.S. women's soccer star breaks leg

Abby Wambach, the leading scorer for the U.S. women's soccer team this year, will miss the Beijing Olympics with a broken left leg she suffered Wednesday night.

The star forward was to have a titanium rod inserted in her left leg yesterday. The injury, coming in the team's final tune-up against Brazil in San Diego, is expected to sideline her about 12 weeks.

Freddy Adu, Jozy Altidore and Michael Bradley will lead the U.S. men's soccer team into the Olympics.

Golf

Richard S. Johnson aced the 14th hole on his way to shooting a 63 that gave him a 1-stroke lead over the Pappas brothers after the first round of the U.S. Bank Championship at the Brown Deer Golf Park in Milwaukee.

Deane and Brenden Pappas shot 6-under-par 64.

Christina Kim shot a 9-under 63 to take a 1-stroke lead over Sun Young Yoo in the LPGA Tour's State Farm Classic at Panther Creek Country Club in Springfield, Ill.

Michelle Wie shot a 67, the best of the year for the part-time golfer and full-time Stanford student, who is playing on a sponsor's exemption.

Kyle Leach of Louisville defeated Rickie Fowler of Oklahoma State, 2 and 1, in third-round match play to advance to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Amateur Public Links tournament at Murphy Creek Golf Course in Aurora, Colo.

Mark McCormick of Suburban made a three-foot par putt on the final hole to post a 1-stroke victory over Marlton resident Greg Farrow to win the 88th New Jersey State Golf Association Open Championship.

McCormick shot a 1-under 71 at Alpine Country Club in Demarest for a 2-under 214.

Farrow, 57, who plays out of Deerwood Golf Club in Westampton, Burlington County, shot a 69 in the final round.

Boxing

Kelly Pavlik will move up in weight and face former light-heavyweight champion and middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins on Oct. 18 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum told ESPN.com that he and Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer had struck a deal for the nontitle fight.

Pavlik, 26, is 34-0 with 30 knockouts.

Welterweight contender Oscar Diaz had surgery for bleeding on the brain and was in a coma after collapsing between rounds of a nationally televised bout in his hometown of San Antonio, Texas.

The 25-year-old fighter was taking a beating from Delvin Rodriguez on Wednesday night at Municipal Auditorium when he collapsed on his stool before the 11th round.

Pro basketball

The Milwaukee Bucks signed guard Tyronn Lue and forward Malik Allen. The team did not reveal terms of either contract. Allen is a former star at Shawnee High in Burlington County and Villanova.

Elsewhere: Restricted free agent Craig Smith signed a two-year deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves that runs through the 2009-10 season.

Noteworthy

Luke Kruytbosch, 47, the track announcer for the Kentucky Derby for the last 10 years, was found dead Monday at his home in Evansville, Ind., Vanderburgh County coroner Don Erk said. Kruytbosch was found by friends in his apartment and appeared to have died of cardiac-related natural causes.

Venus Williams, Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova are among the five past U.S. Open women's champions in the tournament field.

Lindsay Davenport and Svetlana Kuznetsova are the other previous winners entered in the Grand Slam tournament, which begins Aug. 25.

The Soul's Mike Brown, a defensive back and kick returner, was named the Al Lucas Hero Award winner, given to the Arena Football League player who most shows active involvement in his community.

Elsewhere: Joe DiPietro, who spent the last six seasons as the head softball coach at La Salle University, has been named the head softball coach at Temple. . . . The mixed doubles team of Lisa Raymond and Travis Parrott was the only winner as the Freedoms fell to the Boston Lobsters, 23-15, in a World TeamTennis match in King of Prussia.
