Sports in Brief: U.S. team wins world title in lacrosse

Keeping its undefeated record intact, the United States won the International Lacrosse Federation under-19 world championship last night in Coquitlam, British Columbia, with a 19-12 victory over Canada.

No team has ever beaten the United States in under-19 tournament play. The team is 36-0.

Yesterday's matchup marked three tournaments in a row in which the United States had played Canada in the gold-medal game. They met in 2003 in Towson, Md., and in 1999 in Adelaide, Australia.

Local players on the U.S. team are 2007 Malvern Prep graduate Matthew Dolente; 2006 Central Bucks East grad James Green; Matthew Mackrides, who graduated this year from Malvern Prep; and Villanova's John Lade.

Colleges

Florida safeties Dorian Munroe and John Curtis will miss the coming season because of knee injuries.

Munroe tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and will undergo season-ending surgery. The junior played in 26 games the last two years and was a key contributor on special teams. He led the Gators with 13 special-teams tackles last season.

Curtis tore his left ACL for the third time. The senior already had two surgeries on that knee, and coach Urban Meyer said the latest injury could end his career.

Curtis played in 17 games the last three years, including 11 last season.

Track and field

Yelena Isinbayeva of Russia set a women's world record on Friday in Rome with a pole vault of 16 feet, 6 inches in the Golden Gala meet.

In the 400-meter sprint, American Jeremy Wariner turned the tables on rival LaShawn Merritt and won in a photo-finish in 44.36 seconds.

Merritt had stunned the Olympic and two-time world champion in the U.S. Olympic trials.

In one of the last major meets before the Beijing Games, defending Olympic silver medalist Francis Obikwelu won the 100-meter dash after former world-record holder Asafa Powell pulled out of the race because of a groin cramp. American Kerron Clement won the 400-meter hurdles.

Tennis

Michael Chang was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, R.I.

Chang finished with 34 titles. He was a finalist in the 1995 French Open, 1996 U.S. Open and 1996 Australian Open.

When he won the French Open in 1989 at age 17, Chang became the first American to win the French since Tony Trabert in 1955.

Defending champion Fabrice Santoro advanced to the final of the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in Newport by beating Vince Spadea, 7-6 (4), 6-1.

The matchup between the 35-year-old Santoro and 33-year-old Spadea was the oldest combined ages in a semifinal on tour since 1993, when 31-year old Brad Gilbert beat 40-year old Jimmy Connors in San Francisco.

Santoro, the second seed and oldest champion on Newport's grass courts in the 32-year history of the tourney, will face Prakash Amritraj today.

Amritraj, a wild-card entry, upset seventh-seeded Frank Dancevic, 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-3, in the other semifinal.

Santoro, looking for his sixth career title, relied on a variety of two-handed cuts, slices and drops.

In Gstaad, Switzerland, top-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka lost to Victor Hanescu, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, in a Swiss Open semifinal.

Hanescu will play Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain or Igor Andreev of Russia in the final.

Garcia-Lopez and Andreev will continue today at one set each after their match was suspended due to rain yesterday.

Wawrinka, a finalist in 2005, again failed to win in his native Switzerland. He has not won a tournament in two years despite reaching a No. 10 ranking.

Noteworthy

The Toronto Raptors hired former Canadian national basketball team player Gord Herbert. He will work in player development.

Sean Sullivan of Voorhees, Camden County, helped Team USA defeat France, 7-2, to win the gold medal in the men's inline world hockey championships in Dusseldorf, Germany.

The Freedoms lost to the Sportimes, 19-18, in a World Team Tennis match in New York.

The Force (17-7) fell, 5-3, to the Rockford Thunder (11-13) in a National Pro Fastpitch game in Allentown.
