Sports in Brief: For $50 million, Jamison decides to stay with Wizards

All-star forward Antawn Jamison re-signed with the Washington Wizards yesterday, agreeing to a four-year, $50 million deal.

Jamison, 32, told the Associated Press there was no doubt in his mind that he would return to the Wizards. He averaged 21.4 points and 10.2 rebounds last season.

Elsewhere: Golden State point guard Baron Davis surprised the Warriors by opting out of the final year of his $17.8 million contract and becoming a free agent. . . . The Los Angeles Lakers have made qualifying offers to restricted free agents Sasha Vujacic and Ronny Turiaf, general manager Mitch Kupchak announced.

Hockey

The Tampa Bay Lightning signed left winger Gary Roberts to a one-year contract and former Flyers forward Vinny Prospal to a multiyear deal.

Elsewhere: The Sharks re-signed forward Jody Shelley to a two-year contract, keeping their top enforcer in San Jose. . . . The Colorado Avalanche re-signed Adam Foote to a two-year contract and John-Michael Liles to a four-year deal. . . . The Florida Panthers retained left winger Rostislav Olesz with a six-year deal. . . . Center Paul Gaustad re-signed with Buffalo for four years.

Pro football

New England Patriots defensive back Willie Andrews is being held without bail in Mansfield, Mass., accused of pointing a handgun at his girlfriend's head. A spokesman for the Bristol County district attorney said the incident occurred when Andrews returned home about 1 a.m. and an argument ensued.

Elsewhere: Baltimore Ravens cornerback Derrick Martin was cited on a charge of drug abuse. Police said he had a substance suspected to be marijuana at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. . . . The Tennessee Titans signed starting right tackle David Stewart to a multiyear contract extension. Terms were not disclosed.

Golf

Two-time Masters champion Jose Maria Olazabal failed to qualify for the British Open when he took bogey on the third hole of a playoff.

Darren Clarke also failed to earn a spot in the 36-hole qualifier for European Tour players at Royal Birkdale in Sunningdale, England.

Former PGA Championship winners Davis Love III and Rich Beem qualified for the British Open in a qualifying round at the Dearborn Country Club in Michigan. Steve Elkington, winner of the 1995 PGA Championship, bogeyed his final two holes at the nearby TPC of Michigan and fell short.

Noteworthy

Witnesses in a New York City racketeering case have linked former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson to talk of two murder schemes in his old neighborhood. They claim he bankrolled one. In the other, Tyson himself was considered a potential target but was spared for religious reasons, the witnesses said.

The former boxer, who has not been charged, issued a statement calling the accounts "totally untrue." He said he was "tired of people throwing my name around."

Elsewhere: The Wings selected goalie Rob Blasdell with their first pick (ninth overall) in the National Lacrosse League dispersal draft after the Arizona Sting disbanded. The Wings took defender Luke Pinder with their second pick.
