Adam Taliaferro Football Classic

Winslow's Julian impresses in leading White over Blue

The receiver showed his Division I potential in the game played at Rowan University.

Damon Julian of Winslow Township is headed for prep school, and it is likely just a pit stop until he can begin his Division I football career.

The 6-foot-2, 200-pound Julian showed plenty of Division I ability in leading the White team to a 30-18 win over the Blue in last night's Adam Taliaferro Football Classic at Rowan University.

Julian had five receptions for 131 yards and a touchdown. He scored the White's first touchdown after the Blue had taken a 7-0 lead.

The White team consisted of players from Camden, Salem and Gloucester Counties, while the Blue was composed of players from Atlantic, Burlington, Cape May and Cumberland counties.

The crowd, according to organizers, was the largest in the eight-year history of the game that benefits the Taliaferro Foundation, which helps victims of head and spinal cord injuries.

None other than Taliaferro himself was impressed with Julian.

"That young man can play," Taliaferro said.

Julian said there was a simple reason he isn't suiting up for a Division I school and instead will attend Virginia's Fork Union, one of the top prep school football programs in the country.

"I have to work on my grades," he said. "So I have to put the time in on the field and in the classroom, and I will get there."

The field part looks pretty complete. Julian has the speed to run by opponents, and with his leaping ability, he is difficult to cover on any fade pattern.

His touchdown was a 66-yard bomb from Audubon's Steve Rizzo. Headed to Colgate, Rizzo completed 8 of 11 passes for 172 yards and a touchdown. He also ran 29 yards for a score.

Rizzo had some talented receivers at Audubon, but none like Julian.

"I saw he played for the Winslow Township Eagles, and I told him one day I will see you on the Philadelphia Eagles," Rizzo said of Julian.

Julian said it was a thrill to play in the game and to meet Taliaferro, who he discovered is his neighbor.

"I met him and he told me he lived in Winslow Township," Julian said.

The Blue team was led by the play of Bridgeton running back Dominique Williams, who is headed to Wesley College. Williams had 15 carries for 150 yards.

The Blue made a comeback to 27-18, but the White kept the ball for a 22-play, 88-yard drive that ended with a late 26-yard field goal by Delsea's Joe Onorato.
