Sports in Brief: Finland finishes off U.S. hockey squad

Sami Lepisto's goal at 3 minutes, 59 seconds of overtime led Finland to a 3-2 victory over the United States last night in the world hockey quarterfinals in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Lepisto took a pass from Saku Koivu at the point and fired the puck through a crowd and underneath U.S. goalie Robert Esche, the former Flyer.

Finland will play Russia in the semifinals tomorrow in Quebec City. The Russians shut out Switzerland, 6-0, last night as Evgeni Nabokov stopped all 22 shots he faced.

Defending champion Canada routed Norway, 8-2, and will face Sweden, a 3-2 overtime winner over the Czech Republic.

Top-ranked Roger Federer and No. 3 Novak Djokovic cruised into the third round of the Hamburg Masters tennis tournament in Germany.

Federer eased past Jarkko Nieminen, 6-1, 6-3, and Djokovic downed Juan Ignacio Chela, 6-3, 6-1.

Maria Sharapova moved a step closer to the No. 1 ranking, overcoming some erratic moments before beating Dominika Cibulkova, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, in the second round of the Italian Open in Rome. With top-ranked Justine Henin announcing her retirement, Sharapova is poised to move to No. 1 next week.

Soccer

Zenit St. Petersburg's UEFA Cup victory over Glasgow Rangers in Manchester, England, was marred by fan violence.

Zenit became the second Russian team in four seasons to win Europe's No. 2 club tournament, getting a pair of second-half goals in a 2-0 win. CSKA Moscow had won the tourney in 2005.

A Russian fan was stabbed outside the stadium, police said, but had non-life-threatening injuries. Police said six men were arrested for serious assault.

Chivas USA, D.C. United, the Houston Dynamo, and the New England Revolution will be the United States' representatives in the initial CONCACAF Champions League.

The 24-team tournament, modeled after the European Champions League, will replace the CONCACAF Champions Cup.

Colleges

Tim Klarich was selected to be St. Joseph's Hawk mascot in the 2008-09 academic year. The senior from St. Joseph's Prep will become the 31st student to play the Hawk in the mascot's 52 years.

Penn State assistant men's basketball coach Kurt Kanaskie, a former La Salle University star, withdrew his name as a candidate for the head coaching vacancy at St. Francis, Pa.

Cabrini's men's lacrosse team lost, 15-7, to top-seeded Salisbury University in Salisbury, Md., in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III tournament. Cabrini finished 17-3.

Elsewhere: Quarterback Ryan Perrilloux, kicked off LSU's national championship team after repeated off-the-field problems, signed with Jacksonville State, where he will be eligible immediately.

The Saskatchewan Court of Appeal upheld the conviction of a former Canadian Football League player who knowingly exposed two women to HIV.

Trevis Smith, a linebacker who attended Alabama and played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, is serving a six-year sentence for aggravated sexual assault.
