Sports in Brief: Finland finishes off U.S. hockey squad
Sami Lepisto's goal at 3 minutes, 59 seconds of overtime led Finland to a 3-2 victory over the United States last night in the world hockey quarterfinals in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Lepisto took a pass from Saku Koivu at the point and fired the puck through a crowd and underneath U.S. goalie Robert Esche, the former Flyer.
Finland will play Russia in the semifinals tomorrow in Quebec City. The Russians shut out Switzerland, 6-0, last night as Evgeni Nabokov stopped all 22 shots he faced.
Defending champion Canada routed Norway, 8-2, and will face Sweden, a 3-2 overtime winner over the Czech Republic.
Top-ranked Roger Federer and No. 3 Novak Djokovic cruised into the third round of the Hamburg Masters tennis tournament in Germany.
Federer eased past Jarkko Nieminen, 6-1, 6-3, and Djokovic downed Juan Ignacio Chela, 6-3, 6-1.
Maria Sharapova moved a step closer to the No. 1 ranking, overcoming some erratic moments before beating Dominika Cibulkova, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, in the second round of the Italian Open in Rome. With top-ranked Justine Henin announcing her retirement, Sharapova is poised to move to No. 1 next week.
Chivas USA, D.C. United, the Houston Dynamo, and the New England Revolution will be the United States' representatives in the initial CONCACAF Champions League.
The 24-team tournament, modeled after the European Champions League, will replace the CONCACAF Champions Cup.
