Sports in Brief: Finland skates past U.S.

Mikko Koivu scored with less than four minutes remaining to give Finland a come-from-behind, 3-2 win over the United States yesterday at the world hockey championships in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The contest was marred by a postgame brawl.

After Koivu scored, the United States' Adam Burish was ejected for striking a Finland player with the butt of his stick.

As the final horn sounded, U.S. forward Dustin Brown drilled a Finnish defenseman into the boards with a hit to the head, touching off a melee that featured a fight between David Backes of the United States and Amsso Salmela of Finland.

Phil Kessel and Tom Gilbert scored for the United States.

In Quebec City, Andres Ambuhl and Sandy Jeannin scored early, and Switzerland went on to defeat Denmark, 7-2.

Tennis

Novak Djokovic won the 10th title of his career, rallying to beat unseeded Stanislas Wawrinka, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, at the Rome Masters.

"I was aiming for Rome and Roland Garros as my two priorities on clay courts this season," Djokovic said. "Now I have more confidence approaching big events on clay, and other surfaces as well."

This tournament was an important warm-up for the French Open, which begins in two weeks.

The third-ranked Djokovic won the Australian Open in January for his first Grand Slam tournament title, then captured the Masters Series event in Indian Wells, Calif., in March.

Dina Safina, 22, pulled off her third upset of a top-10 player in a week at the German Open, winning the title by defeating ninth-ranked Elena Dementieva, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, in Berlin.

The 17th-ranked Russian also beat No. 1 Justine Henin and No. 8 Serena Williams.

Ivan Ljubicic was two points from losing the match when he rallied to beat Steve Darcis, 6-7 (6), 7-5, 7-6 (4), in a rare Sunday start for the clay-court Hamburg Masters in Germany.

Colleges

The Southern Cal men's basketball team could face a forfeiture of victories from the 2007-08 season or more serious sanctions if allegations are proved that guard O.J. Mayo violated NCAA rules by accepting tens of thousands of dollars in cash and benefits from Los Angeles events promoter Rodney Guillory, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The allegations were made by Louis Johnson, a former confidant of Mayo and Guillory, on ESPN's Outside the Lines.

Soccer

Manchester United won its 10th Premier League title in 16 years, getting a penalty score from Cristiano Ronaldo and another goal from Ryan Giggs to beat host Wigan, 2-0, on the final day of the season.

Taylor Twellman scored in the 59th minute to help the New England Revolution to a 2-1 win over Chivas USA in an MLS game in Carson, Calif.

New England took a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute on a goal by Kenny Mansally. Justin Braun scored the Goats' lone goal in stoppage time.

Cycling

Riccardo Ricco won the second stage of the Giro d'Italia in a sprint finish in Agrigento, Sicily. Franco Pellizotti took the overall lead in the three-week race.
