Sports in Brief: Staal stars in Canada's hockey win

Eric Staal scored four goals to help Canada rout Germany, 10-1, yesterday for its fifth straight win at the hockey world championships in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Canada will face Finland tomorrow. Martin St. Louis had five assists, and Jason Spezza, Dany Heatley, Patrick Sharp, Derek Roy and Mike Green scored the rest of the goals.

Colleges

Ursinus advanced in the NCAA Division III softball tournament with a pair of victories in Fayetteville, N.C. The Bears defeated host Methodist, 1-0, avenging a defeat on Friday. In yesterday's second game, Ursinus defeated local rival Neumann, 3-1. Sophomore Lauren Davis (30-5) won both games.

Ursinus (35-10) will meet Lynchburg today. The Bears must beat Lynchburg in back-to-back games to advance to the Division III championship round in Salem, Va.

Blake Hargest and Meredith Lussier scored four goals each to lead No. 3 Franklin & Marshall past 12th-ranked Babson, 15-4, in the regional semifinals of the NCAA Division III women's lacrosse tournament in Lancaster.

Scott Reimer scored five goals and Cabrini beat visiting Haverford, 13-10, in the second round of the NCAA Division III men's lacrosse tournament. The Cavaliers (17-2) advanced to Wednesday's quarterfinal.

Brittney Ruark tossed a two-hit shutout and Aisha Holloman hit a three-run homer to lead Delaware State past Norfolk State, 3-0, and give the Hornets the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference softball championship. Delaware State earned an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

Tennis

The biggest losers at the Rome Masters were the fans. Andy Roddick and Radek Stepanek quit shortly after their semifinal matches began.

Roddick pulled out with a back problem after falling behind, 3-0, in the first set against Stanislas Wawrinka. Stepanek stopped while trailing Novak Djokovic, 6-0, 1-0, appearing affected by the heat.

Elena Dementieva beat second-ranked Ana Ivanovic, 6-2, 7-5, to reach the final of the German Open in Berlin. In today's final, ninth-ranked Dementieva will face 17th-ranked Dinara Safina, who beat 18-year-old Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, 6-4, 6-1.

Horse racing

Unbeaten Casino Drive is on his way to the Belmont Stakes. Making his second start, Casino Drive romped to a 53/4-length victory in the $200,000 Peter Pan Stakes for 3-year-olds at Belmont Park.

The Peter Pan is the traditional prep for the Belmont Stakes, the final leg of the Triple Crown, on June 7.

Casino Drive, whose previous start was an 111/2-length win in Japan in February, made the journey worthwhile for trainer Kazuo Fujisawa and owner Hidetoshi Yamamoto, stopping the clock in 1:47.87 for the 11/8 miles on the fast track. Kent Desormeaux, who won the Kentucky Derby last week with Big Brown, was aboard. Mint Lane finished second with Ready's Echo third.
