CINCINNATI - Jon Lieber became only the second pitcher in Chicago Cubs history to give up four homers in an inning, and Joey Votto connected three times in all as Cincinnati rolled.
In all, the Reds hit seven homers, their most since they hit an NL-record nine here against the Phillies on Sept. 4, 1999.

LOS ANGELES - John Maine became the first New York Mets starter this year to reach the eighth inning, taking a shutout into the ninth yesterday during a 12-1 rout of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Brad Penny.
Maine (4-2) hit a two-run single and was two outs from his third shutout and complete game in the majors when Matt Kemp hit an RBI single, extending his hitting streak to 12 games. A day before his 27th birthday, Maine allowed four hits in 81/3 innings and won his third straight start - all following Mets losses. Penny (5-3) allowed 10 runs in 42/3 innings, the most off him in 236 career big-league starts. He gave up 10 hits for the third time in eight starts this season. Luis Castillo, David Wright and Raul Casanova also drove in two runs apiece, helping the Mets avoid getting swept in the three-game series. Penny fell behind, 4-0, in the second when former Dodger Marlon Anderson hit an RBI single, Casanova followed with a two-run single and Castillo added a two-out RBI single. Carlos Beltran led off the third with a single and scored New York's fifth run on Angel Pagan's groundout. The Mets blew it open with a six-run fifth. Maine singled with the bases loaded to make it 7-0, and Penny departed after walking Jose Reyes. Former New York Yankee Scott Proctor walked Castillo, forcing in a run, and David Wright - in a 1-for-20 funk - hit a two-run double. Castillo scored on Proctor's wild pitch. ATLANTA - Pinch-hitter Greg Norton broke a seventh-inning tie with a bases-loaded single and Atlanta beat San Diego for its fifth straight win. With the game tied 2-2, Padres starter Randy Wolf was lifted after loading the bases in the seventh. As a frustrated Wolf (2-2) threw his glove into the Padres' dugout, manager Bud Black brought in Joe Thatcher. Norton drove in McCann with a single up the middle. PITTSBURGH - Xavier Nady hit a two-run homer to spoil Barry Zito's mostly effective return to the Giants' rotation and Pittsburgh's Phil Dumatrait pitched 52/3 scoreless innings for his first career win. Zito (0-7), roughed up in each of his first six starts, was far better after spending 10 days working out his problems in the bullpen. The lefthander worked five innings, allowing three hits, two runs, two walks and five strikeouts. San Francisco 000 000 001 1 7 1 Pittsburgh 000 200 01x 3 8 0 S.Francisco AB R H BI Avg.
