Sports in Brief: Kansas' Chalmers, four others declare for the NBA draft
Mario Chalmers, whose three-point bomb at the buzzer in regulation helped Kansas to the national championship, yesterday declared for the NBA draft.
The junior guard says he'll come out only if it looks as if he'll be picked in the first round of the June 26 draft.
Texas standouts D.J. Augustin and A.J. Abrams also declared for the draft, along with Memphis starters Antonio Anderson and Robert Dozier.
All of Memphis' starters from the team that lost to Kansas in the national final have entered the draft. Freshman Derrick Rose and junior Chris Douglas-Roberts declared last week; the fifth starter was senior Joey Dorsey.
Junior forward Dante Cunningham was named the winner of the Villanova Basketball Award at the university's annual banquet. Sophomore guard Scottie Reynolds was named most outstanding player.
The Jake Nevin Award, given to the player "whose selflessness provided an outstanding example to his teammates," went to junior Shane Clark of Cardinal Dougherty High and Hargrave Military Academy.
Junior golfer Paul Amess was named the top male student-athlete of the year at Temple, and sophomore fencer Kristin Howell was named the top Female student-athlete.
Amess has a 3.9 grade point average as a finance major, and Howell has a 3.06 GPA in university studies.
Xavier basketball coach Sean Miller agreed to a 10-year contract extension. The 39-year-old led the Musketeers to a 30-7 record and an NCAA Elite Eight appearance last season. The new deal runs through the 2017-18 season.
Connecticut will play a six-game football series with Notre Dame, even though none of the games will be played in Connecticut.
The series will run from 2011 to 2017, with three games at Notre Dame, and three at sites in Boston, New York or New Jersey.
Elsewhere: Arizona assistant basketball coach Kevin O'Neill, who served as interim head coach while Lute Olson took a personal leave of absence, has been reassigned to duties within the athletic department. . . . Penn State offensive tackle Gerald Cadogan and center A.Q. Shipley were named to the "watch list" for the 2008 Outland Trophy, presented to the nation's top interior lineman. . . . Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel said offensive lineman Justin Boren will join the Buckeyes after leaving Michigan last month. . . . Ohio State will play Navy in Columbus to open the 2009 football season, and the Buckeyes will visit Annapolis in 2014. . . . Ohio State basketball coach Thad Matta said freshman forward Eric Wallace will transfer to an undetermined school.
A man who had a business meeting with former Olympic ice dancer Pasha Grishuk is being looked at in the investigation of an apparent attempt to drug her, authorities in Santa Ana, Calif., said.
Tony Morgan became the fourth driver in harness racing history to reach 12,000 career wins when he guided Fox Valley Impulse to victory at Harrah's Chester. The only drivers with more wins than Morgan are Herve Filion, Cat Manzi and Dave Palone.
Swiss star Roger Federer rallied from 5-1 down in the third set to defeat Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo of Spain, 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (1), in the second round of the Monte Carlo Masters. Three-time defending champion Rafael Nadal of Spain advanced by beating Croatia's Mario Ancic, 6-0, 6-3. Sam Querrey defeated Andreas Seppi of Italy, 6-1, 7-5.
Tom Rice, an 80-year-old Media resident, won four gold medals in the USA Track and Field indoor national masters meet in Boston last week. Rice, a graduate of Upper Darby High and Penn State (Class of 1952), won the long jump, high jump, triple jump and pole vault.
