Women's NCAA Tournament

Maryland puts away scrappy Coppin State

Top-seeded Maryland had its hands full with No. 16 Coppin State yesterday in an NCAA women's basketball tournament opener in College Park, Md.

Willingboro High graduate Crystal Langhorne scored 25 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to help Maryland eventually pull away to an 80-66 win in the Spokane Regional.

Cheltenham's Laura Harper added 14 points for the Terps (31-3), while Marissa Coleman scored 17 points and Kristi Toliver scored 13.

Camden Catholic graduate Shalamar Oakley had 17 of her 20 points in the first half for Coppin State (22-12), and Rashida Suber of Reading matched Langhorne's game-high total of 25 points.

The Eagles' Danielle Anders, a Central High graduate, scored six points and was hampered by foul trouble.

Nebraska 61, Xavier 58 - Also in College Park, freshman Ta'Shia Phillips, the Atlantic Ten rookie of the year, struggled with foul trouble and scored only nine points for the Musketeers (24-9), well below her 14.2 average. Jerri Taylor hand a team-high 19 points and Amber Harris scored 14 points.

Kelsey Griffin scored 26 points for the Cornhuskers (21-11), who will play Maryland tomorrow night.

Greensboro Regional

Connecticut 89, Cornell 47 - Maya Moore scored 17 points to lead a balanced offense and the top-ranked Huskies (33-1) rolled to a first-round victory against the No. 16 seed Big Red (20-9) in Bridgeport, Conn.

Old Dominion 82, Liberty 62 - Shahida Williams scored 20 points on 10-for-11 shooting and the Monarchs (30-4) ended their six-game losing streak in the NCAA tournament with a first-round win against the 12th-seeded Flames (28-4) in Norfolk, Va.

Old Dominion will face fourth-seeded Virginia in the second round Tuesday night.

Texas 72, Minnesota 55 - Brittainy Raven scored 19 points and the eighth-seeded Longhorns (22-12) routed the No. 9 Golden Gophers (20-12) to in Bridgeport, Conn., to advance to the second round.

Erneisha Bailey added 16 for Texas, who will play top-ranked Connecticut in the second round tomorrow.

Virginia 86, UC Santa Barbara 52 - Lyndra Littles scored 17 points and the fourth-seeded Cavaliers (24-9) used a 16-0 run early in the second half to break open their first-round game against the 13th-seeded Gauchos (23-8) for a win in Norfolk, Va.

The victory sets the Cavaliers up for a showdown with Old Dominion for state bragging rights tomorrow night.

New Orleans Regional

Kansas State 69, Chattanooga 59 - Little-used reserve Kelsey Nelson, playing for injured star Kimberly Dietz, scored a career-high 20 points to help the fifth-seeded Wildcats (22-9) snap the nation's longest winning streak (24 games) with a first-round victory over the 12th-seeded Mocs (29-4) in Bridgeport, Conn. Kansas State, which will play Louisville tomorrow, set a tournament record by hitting all 21 free-throw attempts.

North Carolina 85, Bucknell 50 - The top-seeded Tar Heels (31-2) jumped out to an early lead with a 21-2 run and then coasted to a first-round win against the 16th-seeded Bison (16-16) in Norfolk, Va.

LaToya Pringle had 19 points and Erlana Larkins and Rashanda McCants had 15 each as the Tar Heels - a No. 1 seed for the fourth year in a row - won their 14th straight. They will play Georgia in the second round tomorrow night.

Georgia 67, Iowa 61 - Tasha Humphrey made a go-ahead turnaround jumper with 58 seconds left and Ashley Houts hit eight free throws in the final 41 seconds as the No. 8 seed Bulldogs (23-9) outlasted the ninth-seeded Hawkeyes (21-11) in Norfolk, Va.

The Bulldogs will play top seed North Carolina tomorrow.

Louisville 81, Miami (Ohio) 67 - Angel McCoughtry scored 20 points and had seven rebounds to help the fourth-seeded Cardinals (25-9) to a first-round victory against the 13th-seeded RedHawks (23-11) in Bridgeport, Conn.

Louisville will play Kansas State tomorrow in the second round.

Oklahoma City Regional

Tennessee 94, Oral Roberts 55 - Freshman Angie Bjorklund hit four three-pointers and finished with 16 points to lead the top-seeded Volunteers (31-2) to their customary first-round rout, this time over the 16th-seeded Golden Eagles (19-14) in West Lafayette, Ind.

The Vols will play ninth-seeded Purdue tomorrow night.

Oklahoma 69, Illinois State 61 - The fourth-seeded Sooners (22-8) started the second half with a 13-0 run, then held off a late rally to beat the No. 13 seed Redbirds (26-7) in the first round in West Lafayette, Ind.

Courtney Paris had 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Sooners to extend her double-double streak to 91 consecutive games. Ashley Paris scored 13 points for Oklahoma, which will play Notre Dame tomorrow.

Notre Dame 75, Southern Methodist 62 - Ashley Barlow had 20 points, a career-high 12 rebounds, four steals and three assists in leading the fifth-seeded Irish (24-8) to a first-round victory against the No. 12 seed Mustangs (24-9) in West Lafayette, Ind.

Notre Dame will face fourth-seeded Oklahoma tomorrow in the second round.

Purdue 66, Utah 59 - Kalika France and FahKara Malone scored 17 points each, and the ninth-seeded Boilermakers (19-14) beat the eighth-seeded Utes (27-5) in West Lafayette, Ind.

Purdue will take on top-seeded Tennessee tomorrow night.
