Horsham ice dancer needs some skates

Brent Bommentre, the Horsham ice dancer who will compete in this week's World Figure Skating Championships, arrived in Sweden this weekend without his skates.

According to Maude White, director of skating at the Philadelphia Skating Club in Ardmore, where Bommentre and partner Kim Navarro train, Bommentre arrived in Gothenburg Saturday but his luggage did not.

Skaters used to carry their skates on board, but recent changes in airline-security regulations now forbid that.

"Brent has no skates to practice or compete with at this point," said White. "Also, he has no outfits to skate in or any clothes."

White said a Philadelphia-area fan, en route to Gothenburg to watch the event, which begins today, will bring Bommentre, 24, a new pair. But skaters do not like breaking in new skates at competitions.

Bommentre told White that Swedish authorities were attempting to locate the luggage. He and Navarro begin competition tomorrow.
