An inside look at the goings-on in City Hall through the eyes and ears of Inquirer reporters.
Zack Stalberg has no doubt about the purpose of next week's Democratic National Convention in Denver. "It's to elect a Democrat to run for president of the United States," said Stalberg, president of the watchdog group Committee of Seventy.
Mayor Nutter's outburst last week over the role Department of Human Services workers played in the 2006 starvation death of 14-year-old Danieal Kelly was probably his most memorable tirade. It certainly was his most profane.
- Police Commissioner Charles H. Ramsey's continuing review of department policies and procedures has hit home for his boss. Last week, Mayor Nutter's 14-officer security detail was scaled back.
- To outsiders, it seemed work was easy to get if you were a friend of Vince Fumo. The powerful state senator always had his hands inside one project or another.
- When you're a popular mayor, it can be a real challenge to pick up the dinner check. At least it was last week, when Mayor Nutter and two guests dined at Parc, Stephen Starr's new French bistro on Rittenhouse Square.
- Gov. Rendell, Mayor Nutter, or anyone else who wants to stop Foxwoods or SugarHouse from building casinos along the Delaware has to know that the casinos have state Supreme Court clearance to build on the riverfront.
- Though it is his last year in office, State Sen. Vincent J. Fumo is not going quietly into the night.
- The tension's been building for months between Councilmen Frank DiCicco and Bill Green. The rolling of eyes. The ill-concealed snickering. And plenty of behind-the-back bad-mouthing.
- Jonathan Saidel, the ebullient former city controller, misses elective politics so much that he is exploring a run for an office most people don't really think about much - lieutenant governor. In 2010.
- Some wonder whether the laws of space and time do not apply to Mayor Nutter, who frequently seems to be in 10 places at once - literally. He had 10 public appearances in 10 places one day last month.
- Former City Councilwoman Carol Ann Campbell announced months ago that she was advising electricians union leader John Dougherty on his state Senate campaign.
- More evidence of Mayor Nutter's growing national profile: he was recently named "New Democrat of the Week" by the Democratic Leadership Council, the "third way" organization that champions the causes of moderate Democrats.
