Call it a celebration, call it a marketing campaign, call it whatever you like ("For center, conventional bash is out," Monday). Just make sure Pennsylvanians have the opportunity to honor the completion of the Convention Center expansion. Here's why:

Taxpayers need to experience their investment and understand what it means.

Buyers in the convention, conference, corporate meeting, expo, trade show, and tourism industries need to see Philadelphia as a new and reinvented opportunity for their event needs.

In a difficult market, with high unemployment, Pennsylvanians need a reason to be optimistic. The Convention Center is a symbol of opportunity for the city and state economy, as well as a reminder that we are shifting from manufacturing to a service and knowledge economy. Who better than our new state leader to ring in the optimism?

Events herald important moments for individuals, communities, and industries. It's prudent to be economical or even austere, but rather than argue semantics or even over the budget at this early stage, focus on intended outcomes and strategy. Then lead us into a new phase of economic growth.
