Letters: Temple students should be told about shootings

Two people were shot at Broad and Jefferson on a recent Friday night, two blocks from where Temple University claims its campus begins. I waited an entire week for information from Temple about this shooting and, as always, I got nothing. I once wrote a letter to the editor about a shooting that occurred at 16th and Susquehanna, two blocks from a Temple residence hall, White Hall. (That letter was never published, so I am trying again because I have an important message.)

Temple students and their parents need to take the initiative to seek out safety information because unless a shooting occurs directly on campus, they will never hear about it. I understand why Temple doesn't discuss how dangerous its surroundings are during campus tours or orientation, but once students are enrolled, these dangers become a fact of life. It's a lie of omission to hide these incidents.

Temple can't even guarantee on-campus housing for sophomores; even some late-accepted freshman do not get housing. These students are forced to live one or two blocks off campus. By not providing them with current, accurate information about the areas in which they are forced to live, Temple endangers every one of its students.
