Letters: Eastern and Pennhurst were true horror houses

Last year, my husband and I visited Eastern State Penitentiary. After five minutes of looking about, I needed to leave. The sense of despair, loneliness, and confinement wept through the walls.

I really don't see how having a haunted house at either Pennhurst Hospital ("Judge approves haunted house," Saturday) or Eastern State Penitentiary could be called entertainment. Both institutions were notorious for the inhumane treatment of their inmates.

Sometimes a place of human suffering should be left alone to speak for itself. If we listen, maybe those who dwelled within those walls would finally have a voice.
