Letters: Abortion rights at risk in House health-care bill

Your front-page headline on Tuesday was inadvertently printed backward. Instead of "Abortion threatens health bill," it should have been "Health bill threatens abortion" - or, more accurately, "Health bill threatens women."

Under the House bill, the public option does not cover abortion. Private insurance plans that receive government subsidies cannot cover it either. Insurers could sell separate coverage for abortion, but individuals would have to purchase it entirely with their own money.

Antiabortion forces repeatedly refuse to back programs to reduce the number of abortions by promoting contraception. Instead, they push to relabel common forms of birth control as abortion, as the Bush administration attempted to do. We need a national health-care plan, but not one that threatens to exclude a basic health-care need of half the population.

Since when is abortion a "basic health-care need"? Current law prevents the federal govt from paying for abortions. Medicaid does not pay for abortions. Why should this change? If health reform can't be done consistent with current law, then either change the law or have the federal govt stay out of the health insurance business. I should add that based on the recent house vote a majority of our elected representatives support restrictions on abortions. Afterall the amendment did pass. Sorry Ruth, you are in the minority on this one.

Acutally donnybrook, a) the majority of the country is conservative by recent polls, not liberal and b) who cares if private money is used to provide abortions, we are talking about Federal money so, c) your post makes absolutely no sense.

As some of you knuckledraggers would say, I am high on the Obama kool aid, but I say no money for abortions. Sorry, I am all for a woman's right to choose, but it is their choice, so it should come from their pocket. Unless, the mother will die i.e. medically necessary.

I keep hearing, simultaneously, that a.) a high percentage of Americans use contraceptives, and b.) we have so many abortions because "the right"/the Church/pro-lifers don't promote contraception. Which is it, Ruthie?
