Letters to the Editor

Thanks to

Regional Rail

I have a special thank-you for the Regional Rail division, which worked extra hard during the SEPTA strike to keep the crowds lined up and trains moving.

I returned from a three-day trip to D.C. last Thursday, and workers had lines formed and were asking people before they got to the top of the ramp where they were going and collecting tickets. It was crowded, but it felt as if someone was in charge. I overheard others complimenting the employees as well. Job well done!

Adler is not what

N.J. voters expected

Like many residents of Burlington, Ocean, and parts of Camden Counties, I was pleased when, after many years of Republican representation, we elected a Democrat to Congress last November.

But now that our would-be savior, Rep. John Adler, has voted against the House health-care reform bill, it looks as if we still have Republican representation in Washington after all.

Keep jails

in public control

Re: "Justice restored," Nov. 4:

The outrageous actions of the Luzerne County judges should serve as a warning to officials considering privatizing any penal institution. Even the most ethical persons would have difficulty in dispensing justice fairly if they were holding stock in private jails or mutual funds in the penal sector.

Some things do not belong in the for-profit category. Jails are one of them.

Joe Steinbock: you shouldn't be upset by Rep. Adler's off-the-ranch vote against Pelosi-care. I suspect he usually votes the damaging Pelosi-BHO line. I would bet good money that Adler voted for the ruinous Porkulus bill and Cap and Trade. It is the fault of moderate and independent voters, who should know better, that people like Adler serve in Congress and give our most radical President ever a Politburo-like Congressional majority. The country will benefit by huge electoral backlash in 2010.

Perhaps 2010 will be the GOP's much needed come-back, but if that does somehow happen - exactly what will the GOP do differently or better? Certainly their recent history over the last decade indicates that they would do nothing. Nothing different, nothing better. 1 year is long time in today's political arena, and if the Dems can make any improvement on jobs (Yes, a BIG IF), the GOP will have nothing, because they are the party of nothing. It's easier for voters to see and remember the good of what a party had done, than what a party hasn't done - and the GOP has done nothing, for quite some time now. That's what the voters see.

Thoughtful&concernedvoter, do you know anything about the Politburo, or is it just a word you heard on TV/talk radio?

Sandra Choukroun, maybe if you and other Muslims would spend more time condemning the radicals instead of worrying about "offensive" cartoons outside perceptions of the Islamic faith would change.

Sandra until the "law-abiding Muslims" and thier leadership condemn and expel the radicals in your religion you are destined to be "offended". The ball has been in your court for quite some time now.

Carl07 & obviousman#1 - you're right, but let's be clear: Extremism in ANY religion needs to be dealt first from within its own organizations, to have any credible overall effect, both in public understanding and prevention of negative reactionary activity. This includes American Christians, who have been woeful in dealing with their own radicals. Too often they brush incidents under the rug quickly after making their public display of victimhood. The Muslim community in American has taken incredibly great strides in addressing the distortions of their religion by the comparatively small percent of radicals. Unfortunately, Christians cannot say they have done the same yet.

I agree with you Bob. The regional rail employees handled the lines and telling people where to go exceptionally well. They were very patient in a messy situation. Maybe SEPTA should give them the $1,250 bonus instead of the TWU buffoons.

You'd never see a cartoon like that depicting Jews. Where was Tony's outcry over the terror the Israelis created in Operation Cast Lead? I'll tell you where, when he gets his marching orders to create a cartoon denouncing the Goldstone Report.

C'mon! That cartoon was funny! The military blew it on Hasan. They surely should have known this guy had problems. He should have been monitored closely once they found out what he was thinking and saying. I agree, it is up to leaders in specific religions to stop extremists. Violent behavior cannot be condoned.

Cat - I haven't heard "Politburo" on TV/radio much since the dissolution of the USSR. I note that BHO failed to attend the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. No surprise there. His side lost that war.

WendyWendy over the past twenty five years let's compare radical Christians to radical Muslims. Radical Christians gave us the Oklahoma City bombing, several abortion doctor murders and...? Radical Islam has given us the American embassy bombings in Beirut & Nigeria, the German disco bombing, USS Cole, the 1993 WTC bombing, 9/11, Fort Hood, and on and on and on and on. Also, where are these "great strides" that the Muslim community has taken?????

Carl07 and your alter-ego/cheerleader crush Thoughtful&concernedvoter: Do you even know any Muslims? American Muslims? Or anyone else that is different form you? The level of sheer ignorance in your post from 1:42 indicates so. Imams in American mosques across the country have been, teaching being and asking for vigilance since 9/11, and the ignorant retaliation (like yours) to mainstream, America-loving, tax-paying Muslim citizens has been vulgar and disgusting, to say the least. Go learn your history before spouting talk radio BS, please - you are part of the problem, not the solution.

I approve of the Tony Autho cartoon above. In none of the interviews with the Muslim population so far I have not heard an Imam, or followers of Islam condemn the actions of the terrorist who killed 13 and wounded 30 at Ft Hood. While they may do so privately, why not publicly? That would end certain doubts and confusions. Why do we not see Muslims demonstrating in the streets with US flags and saying "This Is NOT US!" None so far that I have heard say they are American's First..and Muslims second. Is it simply that TV cameras cannot find them? We need to see this so we can count you as standing with us against any form of Jihad. I speak for many who hate nobody, and can't understand those who say their faith orders Jihad.
