Letters: Remarks by counselor at La Salle misconstrued
I concur with the counselor's observation that many students have a hard time adjusting to college because they come from a generation of parents (of which I am one) who out of love for their children have tended to protect them from anxiety and failure. The letter writer misconstrued our counselor's comments and proceeded to criticize her.
A counselor needs to appreciate the circumstances that have resulted in students' difficulties to provide effective and supportive intervention. The letter writer implies that a counselor would allow a student to struggle, which is in direct opposition to the reality. A student comes to the counseling center because he or she is "struggling." Our counseling center offers caring, individualized attention to all students seeking counseling that empowers students to develop coping abilities to achieve success in their lives.
