Union to city:

Take a hike!

The Transport Workers Union's decision to strike without notice is a slap in the face of other workers, schoolchildren and their parents, and all citizens who rely on public transit ("Snarled by strike," yesterday).

Unions preach fair play toward their membership, which translates into requiring ample notice of any change in working conditions, job descriptions, you name it. But forget about solidarity with other workers and human beings coming from this union. It's perfectly OK to let an entire city wake up to find itself crippled, without notice, by a transit strike.

What makes the union tone-deaf to the fact that we are in the worst economy in a generation, and many unemployed as well as working people would gladly flock to jobs with good health benefits, pensions, etc.? Actions like the strike only contribute to a public sentiment that the day of union domination is and should be over.

Thanks for

the lift, Selina

I am a regular R5 commuter. Yesterday morning I found myself stuck behind the train that caught fire. I got off my train and walked to 52d and Jefferson Streets. As I stood amid 20 or so stranded commuters trying to call taxicabs, a red SUV screeched to a halt. "I can take six people!" the driver said.

Her name was Selina, and she was taking her daughter to school in Center City. I climbed into her SUV with four other grateful commuters, and off we went. Thank you, Selina, for your generosity and can-do spirit. You turned a frustrating situation into a life lesson.

Waiting for the

commander in chief

Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal sits and waits. The other military commanders sit and wait. The brave men and women of the military sit and wait. They wait for the president to make a decision.

What decision did he make? To go to New Jersey to try to help another Democrat save his job. I think the entire free world can sleep safely tonight knowing our commander in chief is up to the job.

I would also like to thank Selina Hammond. I was one of the five people, including Kate Williams, rescued by her yesterday after my train went up in flames. I can't thank her enough for her spontaneous act of kindness. I have been trying to locate Selina, she mentioned that she works in research at CHOP. Selina, I hope you see this and thanks so much! It's Selena, not Selina. You should just call CHOP and ask for her. Also, the research department's communication person is Jennifer Long at ext. 4-2105.
