Editorial: Union strikes out

No matter how long this SEPTA strike lasts, let's hope Day 2 was rock bottom. It couldn't get much worse.

An R5 Paoli train caught fire yesterday during the morning rush, just outside the Overbrook station. A SEPTA official said the likely cause was electrical.

The train was packed with nearly 700 passengers. Nobody was injured, but the suburban commuter line was shut down for two hours, complicating an already chaotic rush hour. Many commuters walked off the tracks to look for alternatives. Others waited for help from SEPTA.

SEPTA spokesman Richard Maloney said the transit agency tried to send "rescue" buses to the scene to transport stranded passengers, but pickets from Transport Workers Local 234 prevented the buses from leaving the Victory terminal at 69th Street.

Victory Division buses serve Delaware County and the Main Line, and its employees are not on strike. But the pickets from the city division allowed buses to move about once every 45 minutes, and SEPTA got only four buses to the burned-out train.

"Despicable," Maloney said.

Eventually, the city sent school buses to pick up some of the passengers.

The massive inconvenience of a strike is a given. But compounding a potential public safety hazard, by blocking buses intended to retrieve passengers who escaped a fire, takes the union's irresponsibility to a different level.

In spite of enduring delays and higher costs, commuters are mostly taking it in stride. Some are carpooling, or riding bikes.

City schools set up blogs for students who cannot make it to class, so they can keep up with assignments. The cycling club at Central High School set up a "valet" service for students who ride to school, parking bikes in a gym.

The more details to emerge from the reasonable contract that SEPTA offered its largest union, the more difficult it is to understand why Local 234 decided to walk out. The two sides reportedly were only $4 million apart when negotiations broke down. Gov. Rendell and Rep. Bob Brady (D., Pa.) were working again yesterday to resolve the impasse.

In the meantime, those involved with this strike can't just throw public safety under the bus.

To the Editor - who are you to say the people are "taking this in stride"? I suggest you read the posted comments on all Inq articles regarding the strike. You owe the entire Delaware Valley an apology for your unilateral downplaying of the greed and sabotage that is crippling all aspects of daily life and business.

"In the meantime, those involved with this strike can't just throw public safety under the bus." Actually, they can and they have. And you know what? There will be no repercussions. They are a gutter thug Democrat union in a lowlife Democrat-only run town. Rendell and Nutsack will talk tough, but in the end they will give in.

I'm not exactly sure why the Delco buses were able to be blocked by the union. A bus is a lot bigger than a person. Keep inching forward, they will eventually get out of the way.

HERE IS A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF HOW SEPTA JUST THINKS THAT THEY DO NOT HAVE TO ANSWER TO ANYBODY! BY LAW A COMPANY NEEDS TO NOTIFY YOU THAT YOUR MEDICAL BENEFITS ARE BEING STOPPED AND GIVE YOU THE OPTION OF PICKING UP ANOTHER PLAN! I JUST CALLED THE PHARMACY TO HAVE MY MEDICATION (THAT KEEPS ME ALIVE) REFILLED AND THEY TOLD ME MY BENEFITS WERE STOPPED!!!THEY DONT CARE BECAUSE THEY THINK DONT HAVE TO ANSWER TO ANYBODY AS FAR AS I KNOW ARE BENEFITS ARE PAID 1 MONTH IN ADVANCE AND THAT INCLUDES MY CONTRIBUTION SO WHO ARE THEY TO JUST STOP IT! THEY DONT CARE ABOUT ME THIS IS MY PUNISHMENT FOR GOING ON STRIKE!THEY DO WHAT EVER THEY WANT EVEN WHEN ITS WRITTEN IN A CONTRACT! F..K THEM MANAGEMENT IS THE PROBLEM AND NOBODY SEEMS TO UNDERSTAND THAT!SO ALL YOU PEOPLE OUT THERE THAT THINK WE HAVE IT SO GREAT THIS IS JUST A SMALL TIDBIT OF WHAT WE HAVE TO DEAL WITH EVERYDAY! THEY ARE JUDGE,JURY,AND EXECUTIONER AND IF YOU DONT LIKE IT QUIT AND GO GET ANOTHER JOB!WHAT KIND OF COMPANY IS THIS!WE KILLED COMMUNISM A LONG TIME AGO BUT NOT AT SEPTA!

The offer on the table seems overly generous. Will this set a pattern for all other contracts coming up for negotiation? I do not see how the city can afford any more increases. The offer is the brainchild of Rendell and Brady. After crying to the state for six months about how poor the city, how can fast Eddie support this contract. The Democrats and Union control everyting in the city. The city in my opinion is in a downward spiral and none seems to care.

They are at will employees at this point, no contract, they are like everyone else. The State can takeover Septa or Septa can declare bankruptcy and restructure. Why do you need a union in this day and age, OSHA is for work rules and EEOC is for wage/discrimination disputes, you are paying union dues for what. As long as they are paid with State and Federal funds, they can be let go.

I will boycott SEPTA when they return to work. I am looking for anyone else who feels the same way. Whatever your means to get to work during the strike, should be your means to get to work after it. If you ask me, it was a lot quieter and pleasant without those large buses on the street. Moreover, how dare they keep my $78 dollars I paid for a transpass and can not use, and no the regional rail is not near me at all. I had to walk from Ryers station to my house and it took 1 hour. Thank goodness my son wasn’t with me, it would had been too much for him, so I rented a car for the next week which cost me $225. That damn septa better give me my money back soon. I am running out of patience. They must have forgotten how us poor folks can act when people continously mistreat us. Think back to Katrina and you can get an idea of where I am going with this. We won’t tolerate SEPTA’s nonsense for too much longer. Give us our money back for the transpasses we cant use and won’t use. We are boycotting SEPTA. Believe it. They won’t need to come back to work, because we won’t ride their buses or trains.

Bus passes should still be good after the strike if it does not go until the end of the month, you paid for a monthly pass, if they go back it should still be good to use.
