Interboro: Rumors
Two gun shots, a bullet through an earlobe and four frantic couples makes for one chaotic 10th anniversary party! Interboro High School's production of Neil Simon's Rumors was a fast paced performance full of comical banter that made for a truly entertaining event.
This 1988 farce takes place in a posh suburban neighborhood where couple Charley and Myra Brock host their 10th anniversary party. Or at least they attempted to before Charley ends up with a bullet through his ear and Myra goes missing. The first party guests to arrive, Ken Gorman and his wife Chris, work to keep Charley's mishap a secret from the rest of the guests. But, after a few more calamities, all the party goers are in on the secret and collaborate to keep it from the police one lie at a time.
Interboro's dynamic cast had no problem keeping up with the script's fast paced dialogue. All cast members were able to spew out Simon's hilarious one liners throughout the play. An exceptional performance from sophomore Sara Spicer whose liveliness and energy enabled to her to bring a certain wittiness to her character, Chris Gorman.
Another prominent performance came from senior Jesse Brown who played Lenny Ganz. Brown really kept the humor of the show up and ended the performance by delivering an impressive comedic monologue.
Allison Jenkins as Claire Ganz and Bob McKinney as Ken Gorman also contributed to the comical aspect of the show. Jenkins conveyed Claire's nonchalant humor with seeming ease while McKinney gave a rousing performance playing a temporarily deaf Ken.
The set, however appearing simple, had many complicated aspects. The four working doors and half flight of stairs were impressive which permitted some interesting blocking.
Regardless of a few lost lines due to slight glitches in the sound system, Interboro's rendition of Rumors was performed with a commendable liveliness that made it a thoroughly enjoyable show.
