Homelessness in Phila.: How would you solve it?

For years, Philadelphia's homeless system was hailed as one of the best in the country. Now, the city can't keep up with  the ever-increasing number of homeless singles, families and vets. Mayor Nutter and city officials are trying to determine what to do about it.

"There has to be a general understanding with citizens of this city that leper colonies went away a long time ago. These are fellow Philadelphians who need help," Mayor Nutter says.

Many options have been proposed, with long-term housing being offered as the most viable way to help move people off the streets.

What recommendations would you propose to the new mayor? Read our series on homelessness to spur your thinking and then make your suggestions below.

I think the city should create public storage areas where homeless people could store all their crap w/o fear of theft.

Ther manny breason why people are homeless, mental illness, overwhelemed by a drug addiction, disfunctional homes and a missfurtunate young adult. The best way you can help them, is by helping them help themselves.

create a "homeless pound" where homeless people who violate laws of public decency are rounded up and placed. If somebody comes within a certain number of days to claim the homeless, they can sign papers and take responsibility for the homeless. Otherwise, the homeless left unclaimed can be given the same shot that a stray puppy gets - helping the homeless blissfully go to sleep - for good

What goes around comes around. For far too long US citizens have walked past the homeless and laughed or held their noses. Now the country is on the verge of becoming just as they are. How long did you think God was going to allow this country to ignore mentally and physically ill and homeless hungry people? The chickens as Rev. Wright proclaimed, are coming home to roust on so many different levels. We had better get our acts together before we all become homeless and hungry. I am giving to an organization that feeds the homeless. Care to join me? You can find many of them on the internet.
