Dorothy Burton, church volunteer

Services will be held Saturday, Feb. 4, for Dorothy Y. Burton, 98, of West Philadelphia and Danville, Pa., a volunteer and church worker, who died Friday, Dec. 9, of cardiac arrest at Rosemont Presbyterian Village in Bryn Mawr.

Mrs. Burton spent her career as a manager working for the federal government in Philadelphia. Following her retirement from that post in 1973, she took a job as a librarian in the Philadelphia School District for five years.

Born in Danville to Charles A. and Melvina L. Cousins Young, she graduated from Danville High School in 1936, and attended Virginia State College and Temple University.

Mrs. Burton was a longtime member of Overbrook Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, where she served on the missions and outreach committees. She was on the governing board of directors of the Ladies' Aid Society of Presbyterian Medical Center in Philadelphia.

She also was a member of the Urban League and the Guild of Philadelphia for 32 years. Other memberships included the Black Caucus of Philadelphia, Quarter Century Club, AARP West Park Chapter 664, American Legion Auxiliary-Danville Post 40, and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

She enjoyed reading and travel, especially to Jerusalem.

Mrs. Burton, who was married 70 years ago and divorced, had no children. She is survived by cousins Lemuel A. Stiles Jr. and John H. Stiles, and nieces and nephews.

"She was loved by everybody," said nephew Charles Young Jr. "She was closest to her brother, George D. Young, who we called Uncle Chubb." He died in 2013.

A visitation from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. Feb. 4 will be followed by an 11 a.m. memorial service at Overbrook Presbyterian Church, 6376 City Ave., Philadelphia 19151. Burial is private.
