John J. Jones, 84, Peco supervisor and sports volunteer

John J. "Jack" Jones, 84, of Clifton Heights, a retired supervisor for the Philadelphia Electric Co. and a civic volunteer, died Sunday, Nov. 20, of complications from a subdural hematoma at Lankenau Medical Center.

For more than 40 years, Mr. Jones worked as a draftsman in the maps and records section of the engineering and design division at Peco.

"His coworkers loved him," his daughter Lynny Link said.

Born to Francis and Mary Moran Jones in Philadelphia, Mr. Jones was a 1950 graduate of West Catholic High School, where he played varsity football.

He served in the Army during the Korean War. While stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, he was a member of his unit's baseball team. "He was quite a good athlete," his daughter said.

Mr. Jones was a volunteer for the Clifton Heights Police Athletic League (PAL) for more than 40 years, coaching baseball, basketball, and softball. He also enjoyed coaching the Bungalow Beavers in the Suburban Women's Football League.

He was an umpire for various softball and baseball leagues and a referee for PAL. "We had to go with him," said his daughter. "That's how my mother got some quiet time. That's how he made money for our vacations."

A quiet, selfless man, Mr. Jones was "very, very loved," his daughter said. "Every kid that grew up in Clifton Heights probably had him for a coach."

For the last 15 years, he was the president of St. Eugene's Senior Citizens Association. The seniors meet every Wednesday for cards, bingo, and occasional trips. At the time of his death, Mr. Jones was busy planning their Dec. 14 Christmas luncheon.

A dedicated member of St. Eugene's Church, he helped out at the parish's bingo game for many years.

He was the former president and member of the board of directors for PAL, a member of the De La Salle Knights of Columbus, and a former board member of the Clifton Heights Recreation Board.

He played softball into his 50s and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, attending his grandchildren's activities, and doing scratch-off lotteries and word puzzles.

Besides his daughter, he is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jacquelyn Meakim Jones; children John Jr., Judy, and Michael; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. A brother and sister died earlier.

A visitation starting at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 28, at St. Eugene's Church, 200 S. Oak Ave., Primos, Pa. 19018, will be followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. in the church. Burial will be in SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Springfield.
