Mary Jane Hazell | Civic activist, 76

Mary Jane Graham Hazell, 76, president of the Somerton Civic Association since 1989, died of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease Sunday at her home in Somerton.

A 1951 graduate of Kensington Girls High School, Mrs. Hazell was a bookkeeper for the Philadelphia office of the Department of Veterans Affairs from the late 1950s to the early 1960s.

She was president of the home and school associations at Watson Comly Elementary School, Baldi Middle School, and George Washington High School through the 1970s, and a board member since 2002 of the Math Science and Technology Community Charter School.

Scott Share, a son-in-law, said she was a vice president of the former United Northeast Neighbors from 1986 through 2002, a Democratic committeewoman in the 58th Ward since 1973, and a member of the Pennsylvania Democratic State Committee since 1999. In 2001, Community College of Philadelphia gave her its Distinguished Leadership Award.

Mrs. Hazell is survived by daughters Deborah Share and Jayne Green; eight grandchildren; and a sister. Her husband of 43 years, Richard, died in 1995.

A viewing was set from 5:30 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Math Science and Technology Community Charter School, 1800 E. Byberry Rd., Northeast Philadelphia. A second viewing was set from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at Fellowship Bible Church, 13021 Worthington Rd., Northeast Philadelphia, before an 11 a.m. funeral service there. Burial follows at Sunset Memorial Park, Feasterville.
