Charles T. Hill Jr. | Company executive, 79

Charles T. Hill Jr., 79, a former Scott Paper Co. executive, died of complications from cancer Oct. 22 at Chestnut Hill Hospital. He had lived in Whitpain Township since 1966, before moving to Cathedral Village in Roxborough last year.

A 1948 graduate of Central High School, Mr. Hill earned a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1952, where he was manager of the baseball team and a member of the Friars Honor Society.

As an Army transportation officer during the Korean War, Mr. Hill was the port administration officer at Inchon. Because of the shortage of officers, his daughter Suzanne said, the first lieutenant held the job of a major.

In 1955, Mr. Hill began his career with Scott, working as a plant manager in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan for three years, but spending most of his career at the Delaware County headquarters before retiring as director of international logistics in 1993.

He was a member of the Philadelphia Cricket Club.

Besides his daughter Suzanne, Mr. Hill is survived by daughters, Maureen Haley and Betsy Young; five grandchildren; and a brother and a sister. His wife of 41 years, Sheila, died in 2003.

A Funeral Mass was said at Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Mount Airy on Thursday. Burial was at Holy Cross Cemetery in Yeadon.
