John K. Shea | Insurance executive, 56
Mr. Shea spent 34 years in the insurance business, the last five as president and chief executive officer of Atlantic Mutual Insurance Co. in Madison, N.J. His wife, Susan Keaveney Shea, said he was diagnosed with his disease just before joining the company. He worked through his chemotherapy treatments and used his home computer to stay connected to his office when he was recovering from a bone-marrow transplant, she said.
Previously, Mr. Shea had been chief operating officer for Cambridge Integrated Service in Cranbury, N.J.; executive vice president for IRISC Inc. in Cranbury; and an executive for firms in Boston and Manchester, N.H.
A native of Manchester, Mr. Shea earned a bachelor's degree from Keene (N.H.) State College, where he met his future wife.
He enjoyed reading mysteries, and family vacations at the Jersey Shore, in Aruba and in the Virgin Islands. His passion was golf, his wife said, and he was a member of the Trenton Country Club. As a New Englander, he rooted for the Red Sox but was a closet Phillies fan, she said.
In addition to his wife of 31 years, Mr. Shea is survived by a son, Matthew; a daughter, Alison; and two sisters.
Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at FitzGerald-Sommer Funeral Home, 17 S. Delaware Ave., Yardley. A Funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Ignatius Church, 999 Reading Ave., Yardley, where Mr. Shea was a eucharistic minister. Burial will be in Our Lady of Sorrows Cemetery, Langhorne.
