Rudolph Bloom Jr., 87; was Widener administrator
Rudolph Bloom Jr., 87, a retired Widener University administrator who lived in Swarthmore, died Saturday - his wedding anniversary - at Crozer-Chester Medical Center of complications from a fall at home.
Mr. Bloom began his career in higher education in 1952, at Drexel University. He taught business courses and was Drexel's publicity director. In 1964, he was appointed public relations director at Pennsylvania Military College, now Widener University. He later was assistant to the dean and assistant professor of management for Widener's adult education program. He retired in 1992 as an associate dean. For 24 years, he chaired Widener's commencements on the main campus.
Mr. Bloom graduated from Overbrook High School in 1939, and organized class reunions for many years, including his 60th in 1999. He earned a bachelor's degree from Pennsylvania State University and a master's in business administration from Drexel University.
During World War II, he served in the Army in the States. After his discharge, he held positions at WCAU-AM (1210), including handling public relations. He was chief interviewer in the personnel office at Lit Bros. Department Store before joining Drexel.
Mr. Bloom was active with many organizations. He served on the Chester Police Pension Trust advisory board and on the board of Crozer Library in Chester. He was past president and chairman of the board of Lawrence Park Swim Club, and was publicity director for the Philadelphia Chapter, Military Order of the World Wars.
Mr. Bloom was a frequent contributor to The Inquirer's letters to the editor on topics ranging from politics to baseball.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Frances McElwee Bloom; daughters Linda McDowell and Laurie Bloom-Hodson; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial gathering will be from 10 to 11 a.m. today at the Carr Funeral Home, 935 S. Providence Rd., Wallingford. Burial will be in SS. Peter & Paul Cemetery, Marple Township.
