Thomas J. Barry | Social worker, 61

Thomas J. Barry, 61, a social worker and Philadelphia resident for many years, died June 17 of lung cancer at Pennsylvania Hospital.

Born in Scranton, he graduated in 1966 from West Scranton High School, and earned a bachelor's degree in English literature from the University of Scranton in 1970. Mr. Barry received a master's degree in social work from Marywood University in Scranton in 1972.

In 1973, he moved to the city and joined the Philadelphia Department of Human Services, where he supervised the liaison unit, responsible for the intake and care of abused children, for 25 years.

"He was very active on behalf of abused children with special needs," said his brother, Robert. He retired from the department in 2004.

Mr. Barry was a member of Old St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

He also was a member of the American Society of Social Workers, and did volunteer work at St. John of God School for Special Children in Westville.

"He counseled the children and would make sure they were being taken care of and supervised," his brother said.

Mr. Barry enjoyed tennis, classical music, and the theater. He was diagnosed with lung cancer in April, his brother said.

Also surviving are nieces, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

A viewing will be at 10 a.m. today, with a memorial service following at 11, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel, 1605 Oram St., Scranton. Interment is private. Memorial contributions may be made to MANNA, 2323 Ranstead St., Philadelphia 19103.
