Harold A. Haarde | Pool-company owner, 87

Harold A. "Bud" Haarde, owner of a pool-installation company in Broomall, died Monday, his 87th birthday, of complications following an appendectomy in St. Petersburg Beach, Fla.

Born in Sunbury, Pa., Mr. Haarde grew up in Paoli and attended Tredyffrin/Easttown High School. He lived in Broomall for many years.

His Army service during World War II included the Battle of the Bulge.

From 1955 to 1986, he installed hundreds of residential swimming pools in the suburbs, many on the Main Line.

"His business was unusual in that he was the salesman, designer, contractor, and finisher of every pool he built, and each of his customers knew him by name," said his daughter, Renee Haarde Carpenter.

Mr. Haarde met his wife, the former Henrietta Lapkiewicz, at a dance hall on 69th Street in 1950, and they married in April 1951. He enjoyed speedboats, water skiing, model trains, and Big Band music.

Mr. Haarde retired in 1986 and moved to North Palm Beach, Fla., and then to St. Petersburg Beach.

He also had been married to the late Edna Faulkner. The couple divorced after having one son, Robert Schober.

In addition to his wife, daughter and son, he is survived by two brothers; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

A viewing will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. today at Mauger-Givnish Funeral Home, 24 Monument Ave., Malvern. Interment will be at 11:30 in Valley Forge Memorial Gardens, King of Prussia.
