Lillian Glesinger
Lillian Glesinger

Lillian Glesinger, 87, a Realtor

Lillian Glesinger, 87, of Villanova, a real estate broker on the Main Line, died July 5 of coronary artery disease at home.

Born in Saranac Lake, N.Y., she graduated from Saranac Lake High School in 1940.

Mrs. Glesinger moved to Washington in the early 1940s. She was administrative assistant to Oscar Altman, former director of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank; Roy Thompson, former chairman of the Price Decontrol Board; and Chester Bowles, former head of the Office of Price Administration.

Mrs. Glesinger told her children she was trained by the CIA and assigned to Tsingtao, China, to investigate communist activities in 1948.

"She would never talk about it," daughter Cathy Kohlman said. "It always added to her air of mystery."

A spokeswoman for the agency said yesterday that a Freedom of Information Act request would be needed to uncloak Mrs. Glesinger's role.

In 1948, she met Paul Glesinger, an Austrian emigrant who owned an import-export business in China. The two married in 1949, Kohlman said, and Mrs. Glesinger described the time she spent in China as "Shangri-La." Mrs. Glesinger told her family she quit the CIA after marrying.

The pair were the first civilians released under the communist rule in 1949, Mrs. Glesinger told her family, and they "left China with nothing," leaving behind Paul Glesinger's business. They traveled to Hong Kong, India, Thailand, Turkey, and Japan before returning to the United States in the early 1950s. For a time they lived in Briarwood, N.Y.

In the late 1960s, Mrs. Glesinger worked as administrative assistant to Charles Revson, chairman of the board of Revlon Inc.

The Glesingers moved to Villanova in 1965. She became a real estate broker and was one of the first members of the Main Line Million Dollar Club, a group of top sellers, Kohlman said.

Mrs. Glesinger worked for Robert Bruce Realty, C.R. Lange, Roach Bros., Emlen-Wheeler, Laurence S. Scott, and Crozer & Crozer, all real estate agencies. She retired in 2008 and was recently honored as a 40-year member of the National Association of Realtors.

Kohlman described her mother as a private person whose life centered on work and family. She was a perfectionist.

"She was always impeccably dressed," Kohlman said.

Mrs. Glesinger enjoyed needlepoint and keeping a pet cat. She loved to travel and urged her children to see the world before settling down.

In addition to her daughter, she is survived by a son, Paul Jr.; and two grandchildren. Her husband died in 1987.

A Funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m. today at St. Thomas of Villanova Church on the Villanova University Campus, Villanova. A viewing is at 9 a.m. Interment is private. Memorial donations may be made to the Pennsylvania SPCA, 350 E. Erie Ave., Philadelphia 19134.
