John L. Jenemann, 95, packaging designer

John L. Jenemann, 95, a packaging designer for DuPont Co., died of pneumonia June 30 at Dunwoody Village, a retirement facility in Newtown Square where he had lived for 21 years.

Born in Philadelphia, he was a longtime resident of Drexel Hill.

Mr. Jenemann graduated from St. Joseph's Preparatory School in 1930. He earned his undergraduate degree in 1934 and his master's degree in art education in 1938, both from the University of Pennsylvania.

From 1939 to 1943, he was art supervisor at the Milton S. Hershey School in Hershey, Pa. On several occasions, he helped design seasonal packaging for Hershey's candies, his family said.

Mr. Jenemann served in the U.S. Navy from November 1943 to December 1945 as a visual-aids specialist at the Naval Training Station at Sampson, located near Geneva, N.Y. He developed training aids for new recruits.

On induction day, his family said, the officer in charge asked if anyone had a college education, and Jenemann raised his hand.

"Jenemann, you are now in charge of these men," his family said he was told; instantly, he became a petty officer first class. He was honorably discharged at the same rank, according to his son Michael.

In 1946, Mr. Jenemann was hired as a package designer by DuPont Co. in Wilmington. At the time, cellophane packaging was just beginning to be used. One package he designed was for Wise potato chips, his family said.

Mr. Jenemann was also responsible for educating businesses that used cellophane, Mylar, and other DuPont products on how to adapt color and design to transparent packaging.

Later in his career, he helped advertise and promote two other DuPont products, Neoprene and Surlyn.

Mr. Jenemann continued as a consultant for DuPont after retiring in 1976.

He and his wife, the former Mary R. Dougherty, were married in 1940. They moved together to Dunwoody Village. She died in 2004.

Mr. Jenemann is survived by sons James and Michael, five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

A viewing will be from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. today at Donohue Funeral Home, 3300 W. Chester Pike, Newtown Square. A Funeral Mass will follow at 10 a.m. at St. Anastasia Roman Catholic Church, 3301 W. Chester Pike, Newtown Square. Burial will be in SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Marple Township.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph's Preparatory School, 1733 Girard Ave., Philadelphia 19130.
