Richard Evelyn Byrd | Orchardist, veteran, 86
Richard Evelyn Byrd, 86, a prominent orchardist and son of former Virginia Gov. and Sen. Harry F. Byrd Sr., died Sunday at his home in Berryville, Va. He had been in failing health in recent months, according to his son, Richard E. Byrd Jr.
Mr. Byrd spent part of his childhood in the governor's mansion, but didn't follow his father or his older brother, former Sen. Harry F. Byrd Jr., into politics.
During World War II, he served in the 10th Armored Division under Gen. George S. Patton.
He ran the canning division of the family apple business, H.F. Byrd Inc., after the war and then served as company president from 1966 to 1980, when it ceased operations.
