Joseph I. McDevitt, 91, soft-spoken city officer

Joseph I. McDevitt, 91, a retired 21-year veteran of the Philadelphia Police Department, died of pneumonia July 18 at his King of Prussia home.

Mr. McDevitt was born in South Philadelphia, the youngest of seven siblings. He attended West Catholic High School during the Depression era, and left in the 10th grade to help support his family.

Before becoming a police officer, Mr. McDevitt worked at Cramp's Shipyard.

He met his future wife, Marie Lyons, on the boardwalk in Wildwood. The couple married in October 1945, remaining together until her death four months ago.

The following year, he joined the force and was a beat officer until retiring in 1967.

"I just can't believe he was ever a cop," said his son, Joseph Jr.

The family joke was that Mr. McDevitt was the type of officer who said, "Stop, please," he said.

"He had an old-world sense of courtesy and politeness, always saying 'please' and 'thank you.' " He stood for ladies at the dinner table and pulled out their chairs. "He was a very sweet man, a very gentle man."

After retiring from the force, he worked for 10 years as clerk at Cities Service Oil Co., then as a messenger at his son's law office until the age of 83.

"He was responsible, timely and diligent," his son said. "One of the best I've ever had, and I say that with all objectivity. Working with him was one of my greatest joys."

Mr. McDevitt is also survived by his daughter, Barbara Kane.

A viewing will be held from 7 to 9 tonight and 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. tomorrow at Emil J. Ciavarelli Family Funeral Home, 516 Fayette St., Conshohocken. A Funeral Mass will be said at 11 a.m. tomorrow at SS. Cosmas and Damian Catholic Church, 209 W. Fifth Ave., Conshohocken. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, West Conshohocken.
