Fighting Sex Slavery

Members of Soroptimist, a Philadelphia-based group focusing on women's issues worldwide, passed out flyers and brochures at 30th Street Station to raise awareness of the plight of women trafficked to the United States for sexual exploitation.

According to Soroptimist, the U.S. government estimates that 800,000 to 900,000 victims are trafficked globally each year and 17,500 to 18,500 are trafficked into the United States. In particular, the organization says, the sexual trafficking of women and girls is a widespread problem, implicating nearly every country in the world.

The event coincided with the inaugural National Day of Human Trafficking Awareness today, a day created by Congress to raise awareness of the issue
