Justin Bieber, to every single girl

The popster's charisma and hits are just what the crowd shrieked for.

Anyone who missed Justin Bieber's concert Sunday night at the Wells Fargo Center will have to accept that the 16-year-old Canadian pop star fell in love with another girl that evening.

"I see a lot of pretty girls in the audience tonight," he said four songs into his 90-minute set, just before he took a seat in a large metal-framed heart. He, his guitar, and the heart proceeded to float over the main floor of the center, singing acoustic versions of his hits "Never Let You Go" and "Favorite Girl."

Thousands of girls, from preschool age through high school (many chaperoned by moms and dads), had been screaming in ecstasy all night: outside before the show, as parents waited impatiently while the venue staff tried to deal with ticketing snafus; through three opening acts that egged on the audience with calls of, "Are you ready for Justin Bieber?"; and during the onstage countdown before Bieber took the stage. The sight of Bieber crooning above their heads brought the decibel level up another notch.

When he finished his aerial songs and was back on solid ground, Bieber said the magic words: "I think maybe I found that one special girl out there." Swooning and shrieking ensued, as Bieber asked, "How many single girls are out there?"

The audience response suggested that everyone in the audience was a single girl. (Some fans had brought signs, like "Justin Rocks My World" and "Marry Me!", but apparently had to leave them outside, where a little poster graveyard grew.)

"I'm going to try to make one less lonely girl," Bieber said, before launching into "One Less Lonely Girl," the second single from his 2009 debut album My World.

Bieber's set was chock-full of flashy moments, with smoke and confetti, streamers and laser lights, as he covered all the hits, from the opener "Love Me," a spin-off of the Cardigans' 1996 hit "Lovefool," to his encore "Baby." His four backup singers, four dancers, DJ, and band provided visual stimulation at every moment, and Bieber himself proved to be an adept dancer as he freestyled and flitted across the stage.

He performed two duets, "Overboard" with opening act Jasmine Villegas, and "Eenie Meenie" with opener Sean Kingston. He also included a short PSA video clip about the dangers of texting and driving.

Though Bieber's constant goading for the hearts and affections of his young fans was a bit much, the evening as a whole was a success - all 31/2 hours of it. The technical details were well-executed and all the performers were skilled at getting the adrenaline pumping. But it was Bieber's charisma and audience interaction that guaranteed a happy ride home for many parents.
