Spring soiree The Philadelphia chapter of the French-American Chamber of Commerce celebrated its 20th anniversary at its annual Fete du Printemps April 17 at the Sheraton Society Hill Hotel. The black-tie event for 131 guests honored retired Rohm & Haas chairman and chief executive officer Raj L. Gupta. The evening raised $70,000 for the chapter, which was founded in 1989 to strengthen business ties between French and Philadelphia-area companies.

H.F. "Gerry" Lenfest received the

Greater

Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce's

highest honor, the William Penn Award, at its annual black-tie gala held April 17 at the Park Hyatt at the Bellevue. Lenfest's love of sailing inspired the dinner's theme, "An Evening at Sea," which featured nautical decor, photos of his 60-foot sailboat, the Beau Geste, and a salute by members of the U.S. Navy Color Guard. Among the 700 business and civic leaders were event cochairs Nicholas DeBenedictis of Aqua America, Feather O. Houstoun of the William Penn Foundation, and Ralph Roberts of Comcast.

, its first gala at the start of its second century of service, April 18 at Loews Philadelphia Hotel. The dinner for 370, featuring the school's Taiko Drumming Ensemble, was cochaired by Phil Russo of Delaware Investments and his wife, Joan. The evening raised $278,000 for Settlement, which annually serves 15,000 students in six branch locations in the area.

Steppingstone Scholars Inc.

celebrated its 10th anniversary at its annual

Spring Salsa party

held Friday at the Please Touch Museum. The event, attended by 340 guests, was chaired by former State Sen. Connie Williams, chairman of Steppingstone's board, and her husband, Dr. Sankey Williams, and State Sen. Anthony Williams and his wife, Shari. The benefit raised $290,000 for Steppingstone, which prepares talented and motivated underserved schoolchildren for admission to the area's top college preparatory schools.

Nearly 1,000 guests attended the

Preview Gala

for the

48th annual Philadelphia Antiques Show

, held April 17 at the Navy Yard. The 50-dealer show featured a loan exhibition of portrait miniatures depicting prominent early Philadelphians. The talk of the show was a 1771 walnut Pennsylvania German wardrobe, more than eight feet tall and listed at $185,000. The wardrobe, used by George Washington when he visited Michael and Eva Magdelina Ley at their home in Lebanon County, was sold by Greg K. Kramer & Co. of Robesonia, Pa., for an undisclosed amount. Chaired by Lana McDonald, the show was held April 18 to 21.
