Jonathan Storm: CBS sticks with sitcoms; CW gets '90210'
Going where the other networks fear to tread, CBS yesterday announced a new sitcom bloc for fall, when The New Adventures of Old Christine will lead Wednesdays at 8 p.m., followed by the new adventures of two skilled TV vets. Jay Mohr and Paula Marshall will star in Project Gary, about the funny side of divorce.
And, be still my beating heart, the CW yesterday confirmed that 90210 is coming back, with a shorter name and more steam and sauce. It's an "edgy contemporary spin-off of the iconic drama Beverly Hills, 90210," says CBS's little sister network, which aims almost exclusively at little sisters (advertisers pay plenty extra for young, female eyeballs).
CBS, which has about four times as many viewers, who are about twice as old, will return all its current sitcoms, though you'll have to wait till midseason for Rules of Engagement.
The Unit, considered in jeopardy, also returns, moving to Sundays at 10 p.m. Canceled shows - few surprises here - are Cane, Jericho, Kid Nation, Moonlight, Shark, Viva Laughlin, and Welcome to the Captain.
Without a Trace leaves the coveted Thursdays-at-10 slot, going to Tuesdays to make way for Eleventh Hour, about a biophysicist who works for the feds to protect science from rogues and swindlers.
CBS has three other new shows, two dramas and a comedy.
The CW plans two other new series, a drama featuring sexy spoiled rich girls (what else?) and Stylista, a sort of real-life Ugly Betty, in which young wannabes battle for an editorial-assistant job at Elle magazine. Reaper will return midseason.
The net will torpedo its Sunday night, moving Everybody Hates Chris and The Game to Fridays, where they will join America's Top Model reruns, and canceling Girlfriends and the delightful Aliens in America. Fear not, wrestling fans, Friday Night Smackdown lives on at the even teenier My Network TV, which is MYPHL17 (you can call it Channel 17, WPHL, if you want) in Philadelphia.
The CW has leased its Sunday space to a finance company with close ties to the Hollywood talent agency Endeavor, whose clients have included a wide array of showbiz types ranging from producer David E. Kelley to Jessica Alba, Martin Scorsese and Tina Fey. Tentative plans call for a detective drama set in Las Vegas, a romantic drama, and two sitcoms.
New CBS shows:
Eleventh Hour. Based on a British series from sci-fi star Stephen Gallagher, this drama features a brilliant biophysicist who steps in at the last minute to protect science (and us all) from scoundrels and thieves (and Lex Luthor and the League of Assassins?) who would use new discoveries and technologies for their own evil ends.
The Ex List. A psychic tells Emmy-winner Elizabeth Reaser (Grey's Anatomy's anonymous mother-to-be, finally identified as Gloria Pope) that she has already dated her future husband. She has a year to discover which of the many men in her past he is, or she will die unmarried.
The Mentalist. Simon Baker (The Devil Wears Prada) is a genius detective with Sherlock Holmes abilities, a House-like personality, and a famous past as a psychic. You need to be a psychic to figure out where some of this stuff comes from.
Worst Week. She's already pregnant, and the wedding plans are set. Now all the two lovebirds must do in this sitcom is persuade her mom and dad that he's really cool, even if he is a bigger klutz than George Costanza. The always-swell Kurtwood Smith, Mr. Forman in That '70s Show, plays Pops here, too.
Project Gary. At the other end of the marital spectrum, Mohr and Marshall are recently divorced. Will they ever move on? Will TV ever stop mining the same material?
Apparently not. At the CW's 90210, once again down-to-earth siblings move to Beverly Hills and have to adapt to the sketchy doings at high school in the swanky zip code, where, oh, my goodness, Kelly Taylor (the original 90210's Jennie Garth) is the guidance counselor.
If you close your eyes and wish real hard, Shannen Doherty and Luke Perry might turn up in the faculty lounge.
