Animal Planet capturesPhilly
Camera crews from Animal Planet will follow animal-control agents of the Pennsylvania SPCA throughout the summer for the series Animal Cops: Philadelphia.
Producers opened an office recently at the society's headquarters, in Juniata. Episodes will begin in the summer; the show will be taped into the fall.
"They've been discreet," said PSPCA director Howard Nelson. "They seem very knowledgeable about animals and the process."
The PSPCA will be paid a location fee, producers said.
Philadelphia is the sixth city in the Animal Cops/Animal Precinct series. "Philadelphia popped for us," said Jason Carey, who was an executive producer, and has handed it over to Dawn Sinsel. "There was a combination of an urban setting that can also branch out into issues in the countryside."
Nelson said location scouts "liked the variety that we do, from large animals to hoarding to dogfighting and puppy millers that we sadly see here."
Sinsel said the PSPCA's 10 agents and agent trainees under law-enforcement director George Bengle will be featured.
Each story takes several months to film, because cameras follow the cases to court or to adoptions, said Nelson. "They work on 15 or 20 stories simultaneously."
A&E recently followed officers of the Philadelphia Parking Authority for the series Parking Wars.
