Man hurt in Montco blast; explosives seized

Montgomery County authorities last night were detonating explosive chemicals found in the garage of a 36-year-old New Hanover Township man who severely injured his hand in an explosion, authorities said.

Montgomery County Sheriff John P. Durante's bomb squad had detonated seven batches of chemicals by 11 p.m. and expected to blow up four or five more, Durante said.

Shortly after 1 p.m. yesterday, police were called to investigate an explosion in the man's New Hanover home in the 2600 block of Deep Creek Road. The man, whose name was not released, was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital. The bomb squad was called to the house to deal with explosive chemicals in his garage. Durante said the man was trying to put the chemicals into cylindrical containers.

Durante said the New Hanover Township police and the FBI are investigating. - Robert Moran
