Del. police dog wounded while nabbing suspect

A police dog was heralded as a hero yesterday after being shot twice in Wilmington. Diablo, a 11/2-year-old Belgian Malinois, was in stable condition at the University of Pennsylvania's Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital.

The dog was shot about 12:40 a.m. at an apartment complex where Eric Weit, 34, of Wilmington, threatened to kill his girlfriend, police said. A shot rang out from behind a building, and Diablo and his handler went to investigate, police said. In minutes, Diablo caught Weit's scent in woods covered with thick brush.

Diablo bounded into the brush and "engaged" Weit, biting him several times, police said. Several shots were fired. One ripped through Diablo's left shoulder, and another shattered his left leg. Still, Diablo hung on to Weit and released him only when his handler called out. When police moved in, Weit allegedly pointed his handgun at them, provoking an exchange of gunfire. Weit was treated for non-life-threatening gunshot woundsl, police said. - Sam Wood
