L. Merion man elected to post despite court order

An ousted Lower Merion deputy constable who was under court order not to run or be appointed to a constable's job won election Tuesday as a Lower Merion constable. Steven D. Sokoloff, 58, of Ardmore, and his wife, Julie, both Democrats, defeated two Republicans for the two constable positions, according to unofficial results.

Steven Sokoloff had resigned after he handcuffed the manager of a Norristown car dealership over a customer's unpaid parking ticket in 2007. Montgomery County Judge Paul W. Tressler signed an agreement in which Sokoloff gave up future constable work. Sokoloff has since said prosecutors pressured him into the agreement.

District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman said yesterday that a contempt-of-court petition she filed in March after learning of Sokoloff's candidacy was still awaiting a court hearing. - Derrick Nunnally
