A Frankford High School teacher who police said had been shot by a former boyfriend - who then turned the gun on himself - was in critical condition last night.

Bexis Matos, 22, who teaches African American studies, was taken to Aria Health-Torresdale Campus after the Friday morning shooting in the city's Rhawnhurst section. The ex-boyfriend, Lenin Valdez, 34, was declared dead at the scene.

A coworker picked up Matos shortly after 7 a.m. Friday outside the Meadowview Apartments, in the 8100 block of Algon Avenue, police said. Valdez approached the car and pulled out Matos, who fled down the street, police said. They said Valdez chased her, shot her, and then killed himself. According to sources, Matos had sought a protection order.

Police listed Valdez's last address as New York City; however, records showed that he had maintained a Philadelphia address since November. - Anthony R. Wood
