City Council bill seeks to resume leaf collection

City Council, fresh off rescinding a $500 trash fee for businesses, will consider having the city resume picking up leaves. Mayor Nutter canceled the service this year, saving the city $400,000, in the face of the city's financial crisis.

Councilman Frank Rizzo said he would introduce a resolution today to reinstitute mechanical pickup. He said residents had not been properly informed of the change. "There are certain things that the city has an obligation to do," Rizzo said, adding that his bill had seven cosponsors.

Mayoral spokeswoman Maura Kennedy asked residents to stuff their leaves in paper leaf bags and put them out on recycling days. "We're asking citizens to work with us on this issue so we can meet our spending priorities such as police, fire, and libraries," she said. - Jeff Shields

"Mayoral spokeswoman Maura Kennedy asked residents to stuff their leaves in paper leaf bags and put them out on recycling days." On a regular day, it takes me three full trash bags when I mow my lawn. You think I'm going to be able to stuff leaves in paper bags? This just shows how disconnected the politicians are with the people.

how can this save money? Don't the regular trash collectors now have to pick up the leaves and then the city is charged to excess at the dump? We need a new Mayer and City Council!

I can't recall ever seeing "leaf pickup" on my block. Maybe its a Chestnut Hill thing? How can they suddenly afford this? Maybe they will charge by the bag? By the leaf? 0_o

I put my leaves in the home depot brown bags and they just left them there on my curb. I am glad I went to the trouble of bagging them.
