Pennsylvania records first child's swine flu death
A 5-year-old boy in Adams County became the first child to die of complications from swine flu in Pennsylvania, state Health Department officials said yesterday.
The death, on Saturday in the south-central part of the state, brings the Pennsylvania total to at least 20, including an adult resident of Berks County whose death was recorded this week.
Although swine flu is no more dangerous than seasonal flu overall, children have less immunity to it. Children under 5 are at greater risk of complications; children under 2 are at still higher risk.
Four children under 18 have died of swine flu in New Jersey, including a 17-year-old Burlington County resident whose death was reported last week. At least 19 people have died of swine flu in New Jersey. - Don Sapatkin
