Jury picks to start in officer's killing

Jury selection will begin this morning in the trial of a North Philadelphia man accused of killing Philadelphia Police Officer Chuck Cassidy during a botched robbery two years ago.

Yesterday, a pretrial hearing was unexpectedly aborted when John "Jordan" Lewis withdrew his motion to keep his alleged confession to police from being used against him at trial.

Though the courtroom was packed with police for several hours, Lewis, 23, was not brought into court until shortly before noon, and then only for about five minutes, as Common Pleas Court Judge Jeffrey P. Minehart asked whether Lewis understood the legal implications of his decision.

Lewis, dressed in a dark-green prison jumpsuit and wearing oversize black-frame glasses, told the judge he understood that by withdrawing the motion, he could not challenge the propriety of his statement later.

Lewis also told the judge that the decision to withdraw a "suppression motion" was his alone and not suggested by his lawyers.

He did not explain his decision, and his lawyers, Michael Coard and Bernard L. Siegel, declined to comment after the judge reaffirmed a gag order barring lawyers from talking to reporters.

This morning, the judge, defense attorneys, and Assistant District Attorneys Jennifer Selber and Edward Cameron will begin the process of selecting a jury that is willing to impose the death penalty if Lewis is convicted of first-degree murder and able to sit for a trial that lawyers said could last until Thanksgiving.

As expected, the Criminal Justice Center courtroom was filled to capacity with police officers and commanders, who escorted Cassidy's widow, Judy, their three children, and other relatives in and out of court.

Only one woman sat in the audience behind Lewis and his lawyers. She declined to identify herself.

In addition to murder, Lewis is charged with committing six armed robberies, the last of which, on Oct. 31, 2007, was interrupted by Cassidy, who was shot in the head and fatally wounded.

Lewis initially sought to prevent prosecutors from using the statement, in which, police say, he confessed to shooting Cassidy, 54, a veteran of 25 years on the Philadelphia force, during the robbery of a Dunkin' Donuts store on Broad Street near 66th Avenue in West Oak Lane.

The statement was reportedly made to police in Miami on Nov. 6, 2007, when Lewis was arrested at a homeless shelter after fleeing Philadelphia three days earlier.

In addition to the statement to police, Lewis made a public statement that night to reporters and TV news cameras in which he apologized to the Cassidy family, saying, "I never meant anything to happen like this."

You see, this is the difference between a state like New Jersey that abolishes the death penalty, a Pennsylvania! Thugs are very SELECTIVE when they committ their crimes! They like to know in ADVANCE that they can committ their crimes SAFELY! So they target defenseless-or who they BELIEVE to be defenseless-victims! In some cases they're wrong and then they're shot dead when the victim is armed. Thats the key! The thug chooses his victims carefully to ensure safety! Thats what makes Pennsylvania smarter than NJ! Here they "abolished" the death penalty, but not OFFICIALLY! The appeals process can drag for DECADES. But thugs know that its STILL on the table, and can and WILL be used at ANY time! If this cop-killer thug committed this crime in NJ, he'd be in that courtroom sneering at the cops family! But he's not in NJ, he's in Pennsylvania where the SAFETY of a life sentence isn't GUARANTEED, so as you can see, he's got a WHOLE different tone now that he knows the consequences! He's "remorseful"! He'll be a boyscout, he'll find god, he'll do whatever it takes to get life! His safety is NOT guaranteed like NJ, so he acts accordingly!

Ladies and Gentilmen...let's review the crime problem in Killadelphia over just the last year...K? Let's look at Gov. Rendell, the State Parole Board, The Mayor, City Council, State Attorney General and remember the following small, partial list of State Parole Offenders who made the papers.... Besides Murchison and Wilson (The PIAZZA MURDERS) and Porter, Evans (Murderers), let's add Carrisquillo (Rapist), Shaw (Frankford Rapist), don't forget Burgess (Serial Killer and Rapist); Giddings, Cain, Warner (COP KILLERS); Wilson, Norman, Magee, Lassister, Hill, Trinsey, Wise, Latham, Bryant and the 4 out of the 5 gunmen who just recently murdered "Piggy" the mother of 4 children (All are Shoot-Out Artists and again were under State Parole "Supervision"). Why were they on the street and kept on the street? Money...to save money. State Budget Monies (specifically) that were spent on "No Bid" and about 60 million on other "Inappropiate" Contracts that went to Campiagn Contributors and friends of Governor Rendell. Why are so few Parole Violators being sent back to prison for serious offenses and even kept on the street while they have new open court cases...like Carrisquillo? Why are there so few State Parole Field Agents in Killadelphia? Why are 2,000 State Inmates being released each month? MONEY. The Mayor, City Council, State Legislature, State's Attorney General were all told about 21 months ago about this SCANDAL and they have done nothing to stop it. Studies...proposed legislation...it’s all more opium for the masses. Want to help? Encourage all the victims and surviving family members to sue the State. Ask our Mayor and City Council to sue the State and get our money back! Email Mike.Levy@usdoj.gov and ask him to investigate and prosecute "The Rendell Murders", he'll know what you are talking about 215-861-8200. The President's Comment Line = 1-202-456-1111. Remember State Parolees are responsible for our Murder and Crime Rates. Take action...make some calls.
