E. Germantown fire kills woman, injures husband

A 79-year-old woman convalescing at home after recent surgery died in a house fire in East Germantown last night, said Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers.

The woman, whose name was not released, was in a second-floor-rear bedroom when the fire broke out shortly after 9 p.m. in the three-story twin in the 500 block of East Washington Lane, Ayers said. Firefighters tried to save her but she was declared dead at the scene. The fire was mainly contained to the bedroom.

Her 84-year-old husband was transported to Albert Einstein Medical Center and was in stable condition.

Ayers said the fire death was "a real tough one" and "our senior citizens are taking a toll" in fires. - Robert Moran
