Baby missing for 2 days is found safe in N. Phila.

Police in North Philadelphia last night found a 2-month-old girl who had been missing for more than two days after her mother gave her to a female acquaintance.

Police said the child, Shaniyah Granby, was found about 10:30 p.m. inside a home on the 1200 block of West Venango Street. Police said the baby suffered no injuries but would routinely be taken to a hospital to be checked out.

Police would not say whether the home was that of Clarissa Hanton, the woman who had been sought in the child's disappearance on Saturday. Police last night said that they had Hanton in custody, and that she was facing charges in the matter.

The child's mother, Tiesha Pitts, 26, said she gave Shaniyah to a female acquaintance she knew as "Crystal" or "Claire" who said she was going to a neighborhood store about 5:30 p.m. Saturday, said Sgt. Lamonte Adams during a news conference before the child was found safe.

Pitts, of West Philadelphia, said she had known the acquaintance - later identified as Hanton - for about a year.

Pitts reported the infant missing more than 27 hours later.

Adams said it was "baffling" that Pitts would give her daughter to someone and then not report her missing until a day later.

"The mother's mental health is in question," Adams said.

It was unclear last night whether Pitts had been immediately reunited with her child.
