Casey may seek hearings in PHA-HUD fight
U.S. Sen. Bob Casey yesterday said he might call for additional committee hearings to resolve a stalemate that could cost Philadelphia $40 million in housing funds.
After hearings before an appropriations subcommittee last week failed to restore the city's special-funding status, Casey said the Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs was considering additional hearings.
The Philadelphia Housing Authority, in a federal lawsuit, has accused U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Alphonso Jackson of stripping the city's special-funding status, and the millions in funding that come with it, as retaliation for PHA's refusal to meet the demands of developer Kenny Gamble.
"The key thing in the short run is to continue to keep as much pressure as possible," Casey said after a news conference in City Hall. - Jeff Shields
