Nutter receives share of U.S. transit grant
Joined by Mayor Nutter and three congressmen, Sen. Bob Casey (D., Pa.) yesterday announced $656,000 in new federal transportation money to jump-start a $10 million project to improve emergency communications between SEPTA police and Philadelphia police.
"We want to provide the resources so that anybody involved in an emergency can communicate, and communicate underground. It's that simple," Casey said at a news conference near 15th and Market Streets. Also on hand were U.S. Reps. Bob Brady (D., Phila.), Chaka Fattah (D., Phila.) and Patrick Murphy (D., Bucks).
"The technology exists to solve this problem. What was needed was the money," Fattah said.
The money was included in the transportation spending bill that was signed into law Dec. 26.
No other funding sources have yet been identified, and there is no time line for completing the project.
Nonetheless, Nutter said: "Every project has to start."
Murphy said it was an honor to "give this great inaugural gift" to Nutter, while Fattah singled out the moment as "Nutter's first receipt of a federal grant in his administration."
